I have known Ms. Desaye in a professional capacity since I started my law firm in late 2011. I met her while working part‐time for another defense attorney who routinely utilized Ms. DeSaye’s services. As a result, I had the opportunity to work directly with Ms. Desaye on multiple occasions. As part of our case management system, we would meet once a week to discuss case strategy, investigative needs and client concerns etc. She was always punctual and well prepared for meetings and often provided insightful information. She also frequently attended court hearings such as settlement conferences and evidentiary hearings, in part due to her ability to develop a strong rapport with clients, but also to provide meaningful case information and gather information during hearings. Moving forward, as my own business began to grow, I had the opportunity to work with Ms. Desaye directly on my own cases and always had the same positive experience.

Ms. Desaye is an excellent investigator. She is knowledgeable about legal issues, investigative needs and mitigation and has a solid network of defense experts. She has a full understanding of the sentencing guidelines and generally has a very good sense about cases and the direction they need to go. She provides meaningful suggestions and easily anticipates investigative needs with little direction. She also prepares detailed reports and communicates her results effectively and concisely. Ms. Desaye is definitely my “go to” investigator.

Rennee’s knowledge of the Arizona criminal justice system and the contents of its substantive and procedural statutes and rules surpasses the knowledge of many young attorneys. If she doesn’t know the answer, she knows how to research it and often does in the course of her services. This often saves not only for the cost of her investigation or mitigation project, but saves hours of supervisory legal fees to the entity paying for the defense attorney.

I have observed Rennee articulate ideas and concepts to people of intellectual ability ranging from illiterate clients and witnesses all the way to the most educated businessmen and woman and many superior court judges, both on the record and in chambers, her statements are always well planned, substantively accurate and substantiated, well-articulated and measured, and audience appropriate.

Rennee consistently displays a demeanor which is appropriate for the situation – appropriate directness to a difficult client, compassion to a troubled family, respect to law enforcement and prosecutors and deference to other professionals.

Although Rennee understands that her job is to assist defense counsel to the degree it is professionally and ethically appropriate, her matra is always that the truth and her word of honor come first. This has always been apparent to me on the multiple occasions which I have witnessed when she has been required to address the court.

I was arrested for crimes that could have caused me to spend 36 years of my life behind bars!  When it seemed like things were going to only get worse and I was at the point of giving up a miracle happened in my life.  I heard the CO’s call my name for a legal visit and it was you!  You introduced yourself and told me it was your job to establish mitigating factors that would help me get less time.  I remember us talking for almost 90 minutes.  You asked me all types of questions about my life and normally I wouldn’t have been open and honest, but I honestly felt “you” were trying to help me.  The conversation was filled with laughter, truth, and understanding.

I signed a plea for 3 to 12 years and the judge told me he was going to give me 10 years, but due to your thorough report I was sentenced to only 5.5 years with credit for 5 months back time plus 85%.  I have been through a lot in my life.  I don’t know what my life would be like right now if you never walked into it.  I am truly thankful for the spirit that God blessed you with, I feel that you were an Angel that was sent into my life to bring hope back into it.  I have gained so much knowledge that I intend to apply to the upmost for the benefit of myself, my family, and mankind as a whole.  I think about you and what you did for me often.  I hope you can know what you do truly does change people’s lives for the better.

Ms. DeSaye, I want to thank you so much for taking the time to investigate and put together the mitigating report for my case.  It made the difference between me getting the 3-year minimum sentence I received as opposed to the 7 years both my probation officer and the prosecutor were asking for at my sentencing.  I can’t thank you enough as it was such short notice and your report was the only thing that made the difference.  Thank you!

Rennee, I have to tell you, you were really RA’s light in the dark, he was very depressed when his first attorney told him he either took the plea or he was going to prison for the rest of his life,  I remember very well his face, my heart broke, he is like a son to me, that’s when we found you guys and we are so thankful.

I just wanted to thank you and Michael for all you’ve done for my son.  I am forever grateful that the prosecutor is not seeking the death penalty!  I can never thank you enough Rennee.  Just one hurdle we jumped and now more obstacles to get through but as long as he has you and his legal team he is in good hands and has hope! 

Compiled and Submitted Mitigation Package to Prosecution and Panel during consideration of pursuit of Death Penalty… State opted NOT to pursue the death penalty in response to the information submitted.
